Ultimate Guide to HVAC

The Future of the HVAC Industry

Whether you’re a seasoned HVAC business owner or just breaking into the field, staying abreast of industry trends is essential. From environmental concerns to new technology, this article explains a few trends driving the future of the HVAC Industry.

Environmental concerns will increase HVAC industry demands

Increased air conditioning usage worldwide has increased energy consumption and carbon emissions. To combat the speed of climate change, HVAC manufacturers are developing more efficient systems to meet new government regulations and reduce carbon footprints. As these energy-efficient systems increase in demand and sophistication, demand will also increase for certified HVAC technicians who can keep up with this innovation to safely replace, install, and repair these systems.

Additionally, new EPA regulations raised minimum efficiency standards that phase out air conditioners that use R-22 refrigerants. While these air conditioners can still be serviced if you already have them, HVAC technicians must be trained to repair them accurately without releasing refrigerants into the ozone layer.

As the regulations change and become stricter, the demand will grow for skilled HVAC professionals who are appropriately trained and certified to service equipment containing these refrigerants.

Shift toward smart thermostats

Among the many changing technologies shaping the HVAC industry, smart thermostats will be among the most popular new technologies in 2023. Smart thermostats allow homeowners and businesses to control their heating and cooling systems from anywhere with just a smartphone or tablet.

Because smart thermostats require intricate installations, skilled HVAC technicians are needed to install, maintain, and replace these systems when necessary. As these technologies continue to grow in popularity, they will increase demand for HVAC technicians.

The HVAC Job Market Continues to Grow

As HVAC technology evolves and consumer demand increases, the job market for skilled HVAC technicians will continue to grow. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data (BLS), the HVAC job field will see an 8% increase in job growth by 2030. The technician job market is expected to see 13.6% growth from 2014 to 2024.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects there will be more than 38,000 job openings each year. They also project that the industry will add 19,000 more jobs by the end of the 2020s.

Over the last decade, the HVAC technician unemployment rate has also dropped considerably. The unemployment rate dropped from 10.5% in 2010 to 2.8% in 2019 and is expected to stay low as the job market continues growing.
